FO Friday: Wee Baby Cardi

I love knitting baby things.  They are so tiny and adorable that I just can’t help but love them.  Also because they are so little, baby things are relatively quick to knit.  So of course I had to knit something for one of my favorite co workers before her little one comes into the world.

And so I made this

The pattern is the Baby Jacket from Rosie’s Yarn Cellar.  A truly adorable pattern, and it was even free.  There is a small disadvantage to free though.  At points I found the pattern a little unclear.  This often happens with patterns that don’t go through the rigors of the commercial editing process.  And I completely understand and certainly don’t fault the generous Rosie.  After poking around on Ravelry and re-reading the pattern I was able to figure out the pattern’s intention, and am happy my results.

I used Koigu for the yarn, which is lovely to work with and made an incredibly soft sweater.  Two skeins was just barely enough, and I left off the seed stitch cuffs because I had only a few yards left by that point.  But the missing cuffs don’t detract too much.  My only regret about choosing this particular yarn is that I realized too late that it’s hand wash only.  Alas, hopefully my friend will still use it and then I can get some pictures


Day 5

I have been engaged for 5 days, and wedding planning already seems crazy, stressful, and overwhelming.  I already feel pulled in a million different directions.  There are just so many options and so many things that I feel like I’m suppose to do that its hard to sort out what I actually want to do.  Do we go super tiny family only?  Or do we throw a rager with everyone we know?  Do we serve a traditional sit down meal or delicious fried food and burgers?  I haven’t figured any of this out yet but people are already asking if we’ve set a date.  I need a wee bit more time to figure this out before I get to the date part of the equation.

Also I miss my ring.  I sent it back to get resized yesterday, and I already miss it like crazy.  I never thought I would be one of those girls who gets super attached to her ring.  I haven’t worn a ring since I got my high school one back in the early 2000’s.  And I only bothered to wear that one for a day or two before it got stuffed in my jewelry box and forgotten.  But I really miss my engagement ring, and I want it back. I have been obsessively checking the Fed Ex tracker to make sure it arrives safely.  (It is currently on schedule)  I will continue to do this until I have it safely back in hand.

So here’s what I’m going to do.  I’m not looking at anything weddings for the rest of the night.  I’m not even ordering those books recommended on A Practical Wedding.  Instead I will have a very large glass of red wine and knit socks, specifically socks for my now fiance because I love him and he loves the socks I knit him.  Then I am going to cuddle my fiance, even though he’s sick, because cuddles make everything better and he is an excellent cuddler.

Simple Weeknight Meal: Cajun Tilapia with Green Beans and Spanish Rice

Like anyone with a full time job, I know how difficult it can be to get dinner ready after a long day at the office.  Thus one of the things I want to do here is to share the meals Mr. D and I make to help inspire other busy people with delicious and easy to make meals.

Tonight’s dinner has been become a standard here and I often make variations of it.  Its tasty, healthy, and Mr D loves it.  Best of all, I pulled this together in about 30 minutes.

Spanish Style Rice

  • Half a yellow oinon
  • olive oil
  • 1/2 cup Frozen Peas
  • 1/4 teaspoon safforn
  • Rice, regular not instand
  • Water
  1. Read the cooking directions for your rice and combine the appropriate amounts of rice and water in a pot or rice cooker.  Add the peas and saffron.  Stir and set aside
  2. Saute the onion in olive oil until tender, about 5 minutes. Then add onions and oil to the rice.
  3. Cook the rice according to the directions.
Easy right?  Well the tilapia and green beans are even easier
Cajun Tilapia with Green Beans
  • 1 to 2 fillets tilapia
  • cajun seasoning mix
  • olive oil
  • 1 cup frozen green beans
  1. If you’re using frozen fish, defrost it at least partially.  I put mine in the fridge in the morning.
  2. Coast the fish with olive oil and seasoning mix.  Rub the mixture into the fish.
  3. Heat a large pan to medium high heat.  Add the fish to the pan and then the green beans.  Cook the fish for about 4 minutes on each side or until the center of the fish is white.  Stir the green beans while the fish is cooking.  The cooking time of the fish will vary depending on how defrosted your fish was.
Plate and enjoy!




This weekend Mr. D took a little trip up to Vermont.  Friday afternoon we went on a scenic drive through Smuggler’s Notch, and then decided to get out and walk around.  Then while we taking in the awe inspiring beauty of the mountains and a light snow he proposed.  Needless to say I am thrilled beyond words that such a wonderful man has asked me to marry him.  I hope everyone else had an equally wonderful weekend.

Review: Miss Manners’ Guide to a Surprisingly Diginified Wedding

One of my favorite blogs is Meg’s A Practical Wedding, and I’ve been slowly trying to make my way through her list of sane wedding books.  Thus I recently decided to read my very first Miss Manners book.

Of course, I heard of Miss Manners before.  Who hasn’t?  But I had not had the pleasure of actually reading any of her work before.  And I loved it!  The book is set up as a series of letters from readers followed by Miss Manners’ response which she always addresses as ‘Gentle Reader.’  She has a wry sense of humor that pops up constantly as she reminds readers to use common sense and be polite.

If you’re looking for advice on throwing a simple wedding, this is the book to read.  Miss Manners disapproves of many trends that seem to be coming more common at weddings.  She urges readers to forgo practices that are tacky and attention or money grabbing, such as money trees or bags, and go with whatever wedding format you can afford.  Even if that means you’ll just be serving cake and punch for your reception.

I, for one, was relieved to read that many so called customs or traditions are actually neither.  Every wedding invitation I’ve ever received included an RSVP card with a pre-stamped envelope.  Just the thought of paying for all this additional printing and postage made my stomach churn.  After all, shouldn’t the guest know enough to respond?  Well, yes!  Miss Manners explains such cards are not required by etiquette.  Favors for guests are also unnecessary. Miss Manners coverage of what etiquette does and does not demand was truly eye opening for me.  It is the wedding industry that tries to convince unwitting brides that such things are necessary not politeness.

I found this book to be a good reminder of what really matters in a wedding.  That this is an occasion of two people solemnly joining their lives together.  Other things like DJs, registerties, and perfectly matching bridemaids are not essential. The important thing is to invite only people you care about and be polite!

As I read Miss Manners, I day dreamed about having a simple day time ceremony with finger sandwiches and champagne.  I don’t know if that’s what my wedding will actually look like, but having been briefed by Miss Manners on the essential, polite elements of a wedding I feel more ready to face the wedding industry and say no to superfluous “traditions.”

Autumn Morning

I walk to work every day.  It’s probably my favorite element of my current life/work situation.  And everyday I admire the pond in my local park.  Today, I finally decided to grab my camera on the way out the door and took the 30 seconds to stop walking, look around, and snap a picture.

I’m so glad I did.  The yellow leaves, bright sun, and crisp air remind me of everything I love about autumn in New England.  I hope everyone else was also able to take a moment and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings today.



New Beginnings

Dear Readers,

I’ve decided its to time for a little change.  My interests have expanded beyond just knitting so it seems appropriate to reinvent and move my blog to something that will appropriately capture everything I want to share.  I hope you all enjoy this new adventure, and for now enjoy this picture of a sunset on Martha’s Vineyard.
